Meet Project Contrast

Learn more about the work of one of our LOVELOUD Grantees, Project Contrast, from its founder, Maxwell Poth

Project Contrast has been around since 2018. We launched our national campaign in Los Angeles, CA.

However, Project Contrast started as a photo project in Salt Lake City, Utah. Being a Utah native myself I decided to start highlighting queer youth in Utah. Amplifying their stories and photos. To hopefully help struggling LGBTQ+ youth in Utah see that there are youth just like them in their own communities.

Project Contrast was started to help lower the suicide rates within the LGBTQ+ Youth Community.

Annually we release a new booklet filled with all the stories and images of the youth we worked with. This year is different because we are publishing our first ever YOUNG QUEER AMERICA book.

Full Title: YOUNG QUEER AMERICA: REAL STORIES AND FACES OF LGBTQ+ YOUTH

By: Maxwell Poth

Foreword by: Isis King

Publisher: Chronicle Books

Compiled of 75 stories and photos of queer youth across the country. Mainly rural areas.

It is my goal to make sure every queer youth in the country knows this book exists.

Services:

Project Contrast is a traveling nonprofit aiming to help struggling LGBTQ+ youth find community where they live. We understand that it gets better but we want these kids to know that they have a community even where they live and people that love them not only in their own towns but everywhere else in the world.

We hold events or small gatherings everywhere we go. We offer an array of workshops and activities for the youth to choose from. Every location is different than the one before but we always leave with our youth feeling seen, loved, educated and advocates for their communities.

Future:

We plan to continue our mission with Project Contrast to keep highlighting and amplifying queer youth and other local advocates through the power of media, storytelling and creating more books for the future.

LOVELOUD Grant:

We are a very very small traveling nonprofit. With a small team. The LOVELOUD Grant has helped us exponentially. Because of LOVELOUDS kindness and support we are able to continue our mission at Project Contrast. It truly means the world to us.

We can continue our mission in new places and keep working with our past partners and youth to share the message that you are loved and valid.
